The relationship of technology with society is generally characterized as synergistic, symbiotic, co-dependent, co-influential, and co-producing, i.e. technology and society depend heavily one upon the other . It is also generally believed that this synergistic relationship first occurred at the dawn of humankind with the invention of simple tools, and continues with modern technologies today. Today and throughout history, technology influences and is influenced by such societal issues/factors as economics, values, ethics, institutions, groups, the environment, government, among others. The discipline studying the impacts of science, technology, and society and vice versa is called Science and technology in society. As tools increase in complexity, so does the type of knowledge needed to support them. Moreover, these tools have become so complex that a comprehensive infrastructure of technical knowledge-based lesser tools, processes and practices exist to support them, including engineering, medicine, and computer science.

Automation had resulted in a need for fewer workers, a process known as technological unemployment. Some segments of the 1960s hippie counterculture grew to dislike urban living and developed a preference for locally autonomous, sustainable, and decentralized technology, termed appropriate technology. Since the 1970s, technology’s impact on the environment has been criticized, leading to a surge in investment in solar, wind, and other forms of clean energy. Recent years have brought about a rise in social media’s cultural prominence, with repercussions on democracy, and economic and social life. The earliest stone tools were crude, being little more than a fractured rock. In the Acheulian era, beginning approximately 1.65 million years ago, methods of working these stone into specific shapes, such as hand axes emerged. The Middle Paleolithic, approximately 300,000 years ago, saw the introduction of the prepared-core technique, where multiple blades could be rapidly formed from a single core stone. The Upper Paleolithic, beginning approximately 40,000 years ago, saw the introduction of pressure flaking, where a wood, bone, or antler punch could be used to shape a stone very finely.
To understand differences in corporate performance, we used McKinsey’s Corporate Performance and Analytics Tool to examine a sample of more than 2,000 US and European companies with revenue of more than $1 billion. Europe’s economic performance has been generally more uneven than that of the United States. The standard deviation of growth among EU member states was 1.2 percent between 1997 and 2020, compared with 0.8 percent among US states. Europe has six tons per capita of CO2 emissions, versus 16 tons in the United States, according to the World Bank.
Technology has advanced human society for as long as our species has been in existence. Human life is full of problems that need solving, and technology provides innovative solutions to those problems that reduce effort and increase efficiency. Technology is the use of scientific knowledge for practical purposes that benefit our everyday lives, as well as the industries created by humans. Mechanical technology includes the use of machines to do work, and utilizes many simple machines such as wheels, levers, pulleys, and even cogs and gears that all function together to accomplish a task.
